The United States is no longer #1 as an industrial Nation. To reverse this unfortunate trend, we are calling upon Congress to create the National Infrastructure Bank (NIB), modelled on four previous banks in our history, which built the Nation’s manufacturing, and made the United States a leading industrial power in the world.

Currently, there is a bill in the Congress, HR3339, the National Infrastructure Bank Act, which would create a $5 trillion bank. The NIB would build all the Nation’s infrastructure, with no new federal taxes and no new federal debt.

For example, one of the most urgent concerns, right now, is drought in the Southwest; this must be addressed immediately.

According to the Colorado River Basin Forecast Center:

• Lake Powell will likely receive about 64% of its average normal inflow this year.
• Lake Mead and Lake Powell are at their lowest levels since their construction. 
• If the water levels at Lake Powell drop another 32 feet, all hydroelectricity production will stop.
• Hydro-power from Lake Powell provides electricity to 5.8 million homes and businesses in seven states. 

If this drought is not reversed, millions of people will lose electricity, and farmers will be denied water. As this part of the country produces $39 billion of our annual food supply, food prices everywhere will skyrocket.

Large scale water projects, both to alleviate drought and flood, along with other dire infrastructure needs, are possible, but not if we try to finance them through the budget. Only the National Infrastructure Bank can do this. This publicly controlled bank would loan at very low interest rates to state and local authorities to build all U.S. infrastructure, while creating 25 million new, high-wage jobs.

Just look at what President Franklin Roosevelt accomplished with the New Deal and the WWII mobilization. He did it with a similar bank, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation; it built the country, made money for the federal government, and ended up in the black. This economic miracle happened only because Americans were not afraid to think BIG. We can do the same thing today.

With investments in new technology; water projects, high-speed rail, affordable housing, America could become a Nation for all.
